Dr. Günter Stock
President, The Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities

Dr. Günter Stock was born in 1944 in Yugoslavia. He obtained a doctorate degree in Medicine from the University of Heidelberg, where he worked as a lecturer of physiology until 1983. He then joined the research-based pharmaceutical company, Schering AG as head of the Cardiovascular Pharmacology Department. He went on to become head of the Institute for Pharmacology and then an appointed member of the Executive Board from 1989 until 2005.

Dr. Stock’s research has concentrated mainly on the fields of physiology and pharmacology. He is a member of the board of the Schering Foundation; a member of Wissenschaftsrat (the German Council of Science and Humanities); Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Max-Planck-Institut für Molekulare Genetik (the Max Plank Institute of Molecular Genetics); a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina, the Academia Europaea, and the Medical Board of the Austrian Science Council; Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Humboldt-University (Berlin); and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Central European University in Budapest. In 2001, Dr. Stock served as a Vice-President of the Max Planck Society and from 1999 to 2003 he was a Senator of the German Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina.

Since 2006, Dr. Stock has been a member of the Supervisory Board of the Charité – University Medicine Berlin as well as a member of the Supervisory Board of the Jerini AG. In January 2006, Dr. Stock was made the President of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW). He then became the President of the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and
Humanities in 2008. In 2006 he was awarded the Order of Merit of Federal Republic of Germany.
