Professor Kurt Lambeck

Dr. Kurt Lambeck is Distinguished Professor of Geophysics at Australian National University. He has been teaching at the university since 1977 and his tenure includes ten years as Director of the
Research School of Earth Sciences.

Dr. Lambeck’s research interests range through the disciplines of geophysics, geodesy and geology, and are centered on the deformations of the Earth in intermediate and long time scales and on the interactions between surface processes and the solid earth. In recent years, he has focused on aspects of sea-level change and the history of the Earth ice sheets during past glacial cycles, including field and laboratory work and numerical modeling.

Dr. Lambeck has extensive links with the international scientific community. For many years, he has represented Australia on numerous international committees including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Antarctic Science Advisory Committee. He has also held research positions in Europe and the United States. From 2000 to 2004, Dr. Lambeck was Foreign Secretary for the Australian Academy of Science.

Dr. Lambeck’s research has been recognized in Australia and overseas. He is the recipient of many prestigious international awards. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of London and a Foreign Member of several preeminent Academies including the Netherlands Academy, the Norwegian
Academy, Academia Europea and Académie des Sciences, Institut de France.
