""Dr. Masaaki Kubo
President, The Japan Academy

Dr. Masaaki Kubo is a classical philologist who was previously a Professor of Greek and Latin at the University of Tokyo (1969-1991). At present, he is the President of the Japan Academy where he has served as a member since 1992. He also represents the Academy on the International Editorial Committee of the Latin dictionary, the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae.

Dr. Kubo was born in Japan. He was educated and conducted his research into the Greek and Latin Classics at some of the world’s leading universities such as Harvard, Oxford, the University of Heidelberg and also the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C. After his initial training and research, he spent many fruitful years in Japan translating and re-staging ancient Greek plays within the framework of contemporary Japanese theater. Among Dr. Kubo’s translation accomplishments are the complete works of the 5th Century Greek historian, Thucydides, which he translated into readable Japanese in 1967.

In 1969, Dr. Kubo started his career at the Department of Greek and Latin Studies at the University of Tokyo where he was the first chair-holder of the newly instituted faculty. In addition to teaching, Dr. Kubo continued writing and editing. Among his writings is an edition of Angelo Poliziano’s Marginal Comments on Sappho’s Letter by Ovid and Jacobus de Goyer’s Annotationes in Homerum, two works that may be deemed seminal contributions to the history of classical scholarship in the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

After his retirement from the University of Tokyo, Dr. Kubo spent more than seven years from 1991 to 1998 planning and establishing the structure of a new college and graduate school for art and design in Yamagata City in his capacity as president.
