The Forum will take place at the International Conference Hall of the Building for Humanities and Social Sciences, Academia Sinica.

Shuttle buses for Forum Participants
There will be a free daily shuttle bus available for Forum participants (Saturday-Sunday) between the Academia Sinica Forum site and the Grand Hotel. Routes and departure times of shuttle will be announced later.

Airport & City Transportation
Nankang has plenty of taxis, buses and convenient subway access (the Mass Rapid Transit or “MRT”). Academia Sinica is easily accessed from central Taipei either by taxi, or by MRT and bus. It is also possible to drive to the Forum site directly.

How to get from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport to the Grand Hotel and the Academia Sinica forum venue

Upon arriving at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (CKS International Airport), it is possible to travel to the Grand Hotel and the forum venue in the following ways:

To the Grand Hotel

By taxi:
There is a taxi queue outside the Arrival Halls of both Terminals (I and II) of the Airport. The charge is the meter charge plus a 50% surcharge. The fare is around NT$1,600 (not including Highway toll fee of NT$40).

By Bus:
Please take a Toward You Airbus to the Grand Hotel. You will be charged after you board the bus. The journey from the Airport to the Hotel is about 1 hour (depending on traffic). The fare is around NT$140.

To Academia Sinica

By taxi:
Taxi is the most convenient way to get to the Center of Academic Activities of Academia Sinica. (It is about a 50-minute car ride during moderate traffic hours). From the Airport, you may take a taxi directly to Academia Sinica for around NT$1500 (not including the highway toll fee of NT$40).

By Bus:
Bus ticket counters are located in the Arrival Passenger Reception Areas of both Terminals.

Bus Platform

  • Terminal I: On the southwest side of the Arrival Passenger Reception Area
  • Terminal II: On the northeast side of the Arrival Passenger Reception Area.

Four bus companies now provide frequent services between the Airport and destinations in Taipei:

Taiwan Bus Corp
To Taipei Railway Station and Taipei Sung Shan Airport. You may get off at either stop and then take a taxi to Academia Sinica for approximately NT$300.

To Zhongxiao-Fuxing MRT Station. If you only have light luggage, this is a good way to save money. You can get off at Zhongxiao-Fuxing MRT Station, take the MRT “Blue Line” and get off at the terminal stop “Kunyang”. Walk out of the station and take a taxi to Academia Sinica for about NT$120.

Toward You Air Bus *Fare paid on the bus*
To Zhongxiao-Fuxing MRT Station, the Hyatt Hotel and the Far Eastern Hotel. Get off at one of the above stops and take a taxi to Academia Sinica for around NT$220.

FreeGo Express
To Taipei Sung Shan Airport. Take a taxi from Sung Shan Airport to Academia Sinica for around NT$300
Adult single fares vary from NT$110 to NT$140 per trip and it takes about 1 hour in moderate traffic from the Airport to Taipei downtown.

How to get to Academia Sinica from the Grand Hotel

You can take a taxi from directly outside the Grand Hotel. It costs around NT$300~NT$350 to Academia Sinica. At the main entrance to Academia Sinica, instruct the taxi driver to enter and take you to the Building for Humanities and Social Sciences.

Alternatively, you may go by MRT. The Grand Hotel provides free shuttle service to Yuan Shan MRT Station. From this station you may take the MRT to Kunyang Station and then transfer to a bus 270, Blue 25 or 212. The bus stops are directly opposite the Kunyang station exit on the other side of the road. Get off the bus at Academia Sinica Village bus stop and walk into the main entrance of Academia Sinica.

Car Parking (local participants)
Limited free parking in the first basement of the Forum site is available for local participants. About 10 more free parking spaces are available in the outside parking lot near the Forum site.

Official Language
The official language of the Forum is English, which will be used in all presentations as well as in all printed materials. Interpretation facilities will NOT be provided.

Time Zone
Taiwan is 8 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Taiwan is sub-tropical, but the climate varies from hot and humid in the south tempering to cooler in the north and inland mountainous regions. December temperature in Taipei ranges from 13°C at night to 22°C during the daytime. Low temperatures may occur when a cold front approaches. Currency and Banks
Taiwan's currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD). Foreign currencies and traveler’s cheques (American Express, Citibank or Thomas Cook) can be exchanged at government-designated banks and hotels. Major credit cards such as American Express, Master Card, Visa, and Diners Club are widely accepted. Banks are open from Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 15:30 and closed during the weekend and public holidays. US dollars are the preferred currency. ATMs are plentiful but not all accept international bank cards.

Visitors holding the passports of the following countries may apply for Landing Visas: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand, the Netherlands (Holland), Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, U.K. and U.S.A.

Please note that the visa application for PRC passport holders must be initiated by a local sponsor. Because the visa application process for participants holding PRC passports takes up to THREE months, we strongly advise participants from the PRC to register and inform Ms. Svetlana Sam ( before August 15, 2008 for special arrangements.

The documents you should submit are as below:

  1. Please fill out and sign the application form.
  2. Please send us a photocopy (or scan file) of your ID card in jpg/pdf format. (Do not send us the photographed copy of your ID card. Immigration Bureau will not accept it due to the poor image quality.)
  3. Please send us your passport photo taken in plain white background.
  4. Please send us the photographed copy of your highest education diploma or certificate of incumbency.
