Dr. Tariq S. Durrani

Dr. Tariq S. Durrani is the Vice President for Physical Sciences and Engineering at the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE), Scotland’s National Academy for Science and Letters. He is also the Deputy
Convener of the RSE’s International Committee.

In addition, Dr. Durrani is Professor of Signal Processing at the University of Strathclyde, Scotland, where he leads one of Europe's largest signal and image processing research groups, and has been Deputy Principal from 2000-2006.

Dr. Durrani received his MSc and PhD degrees in 1967 and 1970 respectively, from the University of Southampton. After postdoctoral research at Southampton, he joined the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, as a lecturer in 1976. He was appointed Professor of Signal Processing in 1982.

For the past twenty-five years, Dr. Durrani has worked on and supervised some 60 projects sponsored by UK research councils, government and industry; the US Navy; and the EU. He has supervised over 30 PhD students, and is the author or co-author of more than 320 papers and six books.

Dr. Durrani is a director of: the UK Leadership Foundation for Higher Education, the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and the Institute for System Level Integration. He is also a member of the Scottish Funding Council, the main body that distributes government funding to Scottish universities and colleges.

From 2006-2007 he was President of the Engineering Management Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The IEEE is the world's largest body of professional engineers. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the IEEE, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). He was awarded the OBE in the Queen’s Honours List in December 2002 for services to higher education and electronics research.
